AAPL Working Interest/Net Revenue Interest Calculation Workshop – Oct. 2014

We headed back to school last week along with about 50 landmen for the AAPL Working Interest/Net Revenue Interest Calculation Workshop in Lafayette, presented by Douglas Potter, CPL, CDOA, CPLTA. After a delicious breakfast, courtesy of iLandMan, this one-day workshop began with simple examples and progressed towards complex examples, teaching the fundamental calculations for Royalties, ORRIs, Net Revenue Interests and Working Interests.

Students learned the fundamental progressions and calculations of WI & NRI as an unleased mineral interest becomes leased and progresses to become part of a producing tract, oil unit, gas unit, and field-wide unit and more. Along with this new knowledge, students earned six CPL/RPL/RL credits, and got to see some of iLandMan’s new Royalty Division Order and Interest Deck functionality.

Houston Dealmakers – Oct. 2014

Earlier this month we attended the PLS Dealmakers Prospect and Property Expo at the Hyatt Regency in Houston where there were about 50 booths with all different kinds of prospects. We were interested to see that there were everything from small one-off conventional deals, to large 100,000+ acre unconventional programs, and even a few 3-D seismic shoots thrown in.

The crowd was enthusiastic, with a number of buyers in attendance. We were particularly impressed with several deals that had very strong technical backing and our team made it a point to go to every booth to understand what was being sold and where the properties were located.

Naturally we wanted to see what technology was being used (if any) in the lease acquisition, lease maintenance, well information, and mapping processes. As usual we find only about 50% of this industry is using technology to its fullest extent, and those are mostly the larger companies. Not surprisingly the smaller companies think it is too expensive, but they are completely mistaken!
